Alternate Side Parking
The City suspends alternate side parking
(street cleaning) regulations, for both
street cleaning purposes and traffic flow,
on the 34 legal and religious holidays
listed below. This includes suspension of
street cleaning regulations at metered
spaces. This policy is implemented jointly
by the Department of Transportation,the
Department of Sanitation, and the Police
Department. On major legal holidays, No
Stopping, No Standing, and No Parking
regulations are suspended, except where
those regulations are normally in effect
seven days a week. On all other holidays,
only Street Cleaning Rules are suspended.
All other regulations remain in effect.
Parking meter regulations will be suspended
on major legal holidays.

Emergency Suspensions of Alternate Side
Parking Regulations
Alternate Side Parking Regulations may be
changed from time to time because of snow
emergencies, inclement weather conditions or
other emergencies. In these circumstances,
the information is provided to the news
media. Call the New York City Call Center,
311, to obtain information on emergency
suspensions of the regulations.
The City carefully considers whether to
suspend Alternate Side Parking regulations
in anticipation of a significant snowfall
and then when to reinstate them in the days
following a storm.
The Departments of Transportation and
Sanitation consult weather reports
continuously both before and during
snowfalls in order to determine whether
suspension is necessary. As weather patterns
can change quickly, this decision must
sometimes be made late in the day.
In the days following a storm, the goal is
to reinstate Alternate Side Parking
Regulations as soon as possible so that
plows can begin removing snow and ice from
the curbside lanes. This helps clear parking
lanes and catch basins, which reduces the
possibility of street flooding when snow and
ice melts and also helps return street
cleaning operations back to normal.
The City works to keep our streets as clear
and safe as possible while trying to
minimizing inconvenience for all New
Yorkers.
Alternate Side Parking rules were suspended
on December 19, December 21-22, December 31,
2009, January 8 and February 6, 2010 to
facilitate snow removal.
Temporary Suspensions of Street Cleaning
Regulations
Street Cleaning Regulations (SCR) may be
suspended temporarily in parts of the City
in order to post new regulations. This
program is a cooperative Department of
Transportation/Department of Sanitation
effort to change existing street cleaning
rules, as well as to replace missing or
damaged parking signage.
When the Department of Sanitation makes a
determination to change street cleaning
rules in an affected area, the regulations
are suspended temporarily to allow the
Department of Transportation to post new
signs describing the new rules. This
suspension does not affect other parking
rules which are not Street Cleaning
Regulations.
When the posting of new signage is
completed, the Department of Sanitation
provides a weeklong orientation period
during which its crews clean the streets
according to the newly posted schedule but
do not issue summonses. At the conclusion of
the orientation period, enforcement of the
new rules takes effect.
Park Slope Alternate Side Parking Suspension
Study (December 2008)
During the Summer of 2008 DOT suspended
alternate side parking (ASP) in Park Slope.
This study finds the suspension caused
minimal impact on traffic and parking
conditions in that neighborhood.
DOT Advances Reduced Alternate Side Parking
Regulation Pilot Program in Bronx Community
District 8 to Simplify Parking and Reduce
Vehicle Trips
Alternate Side Parking Regulations will be
temporarily suspended starting on Monday,
Jan. 4, 2010 in parts of the Kingsbridge,
Kingsbridge Heights and Van Cortlandt
Village sections of Bronx Community District
8 for approximately six to eight weeks as
the DOT installs some 1,400 signs with new,
reduced regulations. Meanwhile, the first
phase of this project is now complete, with
signs in Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, Marble
Hill and Kingsbridge west of Broadway
(included) having been replaced since Oct.
