SUNY Downstate to Address Parenting a Child with Autism, July 14:

Speakers Will Discuss Services for Children and Behavioral Approaches in the Home

SUNY Downstate Medical Center invites parents of children with autism to attend a presentation, “Parenting Your Child with Autism: You Are Not Alone,” Wednesday, July 14, 2010, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, in Classroom 1A, 395 Lenox Road, Brooklyn, New York 11203. For more information or for help with childcare in order to attend this free event, parents may call 718-270-7611.

Harris Huberman, MD, director of the Division of Child Development in the Department of Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate, said, There is a need for more services for parents of children with autism in Central Brooklyn. Our purpose is to have a dialogue with parents of children with autism to learn more about their experiences and needs, and together to develop ongoing support programs. We also intend to help parents by advising them of behavioral approaches in treating autism – a technique that has been proven to work – that they can introduce into their homes.

In addition to Dr. Huberman, speakers include Kathy McCormick, MS, LMHC, associate executive director of Downstate’s Infant and Child Learning Center, who will discuss programs and services for young children with autism. Two experts on applied behavioral analysis (ABA) in treating autism – Amy Conforti, MSEd, SAS, BCBA, and Kathleen Flanders, MSEd, SDL, BCBA – will speak on behavioral approaches to treating autism that parents may employ at home.

The event is sponsored by SUNY Downstate’s Department of Pediatrics, College of Nursing, Department of Nursing at University Hospital of Brooklyn, and Infant and Child Learning Center.

**********

SUNY Downstate Medical Center, founded in 1860, was the first medical school in the United States to bring teaching out of the lecture hall and to the patient’s bedside. A center of innovation and excellence in research and clinical service delivery, SUNY Downstate Medical Center comprises a College of Medicine, Colleges of Nursing and Health Related Professions, a School of Graduate Studies, a School of Public Health, University Hospital of Brooklyn, and an Advanced Biotechnology Park and Biotechnology Incubator.

SUNY Downstate ranks eighth nationally in the number of alumni who are on the faculty of American medical schools. More physicians practicing in New York City have graduated from SUNY Downstate than from any other medical school.
