Event Details

Join us at MoCADA for the screening of The Quest for Asson documentary, by Gro Mambo Angela Novanyon Idizol. The event is free and patrons will not only be able to enjoy a cocktail reception and film, but will also be able to view MoCADA's current art exhibition The Re-imagining of Haiti before it closes. The documentary shows the initiation of four new high priests (Gro Hungans) and high priestesses (Gro Mambos) who are spiritual godchildren of world renowned High Priestess and Chairperson of the National African Religion Congress / NARC World, Gro Mambo Angela Novanyon Idizol.

The four initiates will pass through the hardest and highest ceremony of their lives. The ceremony of asson or asona initiation lasts forty-nine days, one day for the making of the packettes for divination, seven days inside the initiation room, forty-one days to wear beads, and the initiation itself marks the beginning of training and study. The ceremony will open the eyes of anyone who passes through the doors of priesthood in the Voodoo faith. They will rise from their initiation new and with a different way to see, feel, and speak and a new way to reach their goals and success.

Within the footage you will find the answers to questions that scholars, professors, and the general public have held about Voodoo and mysteries that have survived in society for ages. During this footage you will witness the making of the packettes, which is the preparation for the blessings of spiritual sight or divination for the initiation. It is from this ceremony when these sacred implements are made that the answer to the origin of the voodoo doll can be found, as the packettes, strung together with needle, pins, and thread, have been misrepresented for centuries. You will then see the opening ceremony and first day taken inside the initiation room; Boulezen, which is the day that the initiates will receive blessings of fire on their hands and feet over a blazing fire; and the day that the initiates rise from the initiation room and are introduced to the public for the very first time as High Priests and High Priestesses. The footage will shed light on the beauty of the religion and help clear up the false image that Voodoo has had for years. This documentary takes you through clips of the initiation ceremonial days, showing you each special moment during the birth of our four new High Priests and Priestesses. As you sit and watch the precious days of the initiates you will receive insight of this great religion.

The Quest for Asson documentary serves as an introduction to the extended 8-disc DVD compilation now available.

The Beauty of the Voodoo is an artistic platform created to dispel the myths of the Voodoo religion and show the healing and life changing aspects of the faith. Voodoo offers a chance for change. Unlike what society portrays it to be, Voodoo helps bring a correction to the lives of people in order for them to elevate and prosper.

Artistic platforms such as documentary screenings, visual and performance artist showcases, lectures and events will be produced from May to October. Every event will be a fundraiser for the LePeristyle Haitian Sanctuary Haiti Relief Fund.

Accordion troubadour Jason Webley is returning to Brooklyn for a special performance with Debutante Hour and Yula and the Extended family on May 19.

Since his beginnings as a street performer, Webley has built a loyal following around the globe with his uninhibited live performances. His relentless touring schedule has taken him to over 30 countries, most concerts ending with the entire crowd locked arm-in-arm, swaying and singing. The Seattle Times describes Webley as one of Seattle’s most talented musicians, a singer-songwriter with a rare gift for crafting timeless songs that approach Waits and Leonard Cohen territory.

Webley has released six albums and numerous collaborations on his own record label, Eleven Records. He organizes and headlines the annual Monsters of Accordion tour and has shared the stage with the likes of The Avett Brothers, Devotchka and Regina Spektor. Webley also performs as one-half of the duo Evelyn Evelyn with Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls.

At the end of 2011, Webley has announced that he will be taking a year-long break from touring, making this concert with Debutante Hour and Yula and the Extended Family his last Brooklyn appearance for some time.

Webley is performing on May 19 at XPO 929 (929 Broadway). The concert begins at 8 pm and is open to all ages. Admission is $10.

Brooklynite Rosemary Harris talks about her mysteries (Pushing Up Daisies, The Big Dirt Nap, Dead Head, Slugfest). Books available for signing. 6:30, Brooklyn Public Library, Fort Hamilton Branch, 9424 Fourth Avenue. http://rosemaryharris.com
