Restoration's Center for Arts and Culture is excited to present two new exhibitions in the Skylight Gallery: Cultural Warriors: Tribute to the East and Emerging Masters.
Cultural Warriors: Tribute to the East will examine the amazing history and accomplishments of the fabled East Cultural Center. Founded in 1969 by Jitu Weusi and the African Students Association, the East was a cultural and educational center for people of African ancestry. For many of today's educational, cultural and legislative leaders, it was the epicenter in Brooklyn of the 1969 civil rights and cultural movement sweeping the nation. The exhibition will display ephemera and photos by Basir McChawi, Ogundipe Fayomi, and Mensah Wali.

Emerging Masters will pay homage to three young artists who are growing in stature and recognition and to the lasting power, influence and presence of African cultural iconography in art. The show includes digital photographic images capturing African rituals in action, by William Jones, colorful paintings by urban cubist Bryan Masud, and abstract paintings expressing life experiences by Aleathia Brown.

Artist Talk: Saturday April 25, 2009 2PM-4PM Aleathia Brown, William Jones and Masud

Youth Arts Workshop: Saturday May 2, 2009 2PM-5PM,
William Jones, Lecture demonstration, explores digital illustration & process used to capture traditional African sacred, social and cultural events.

This generation interviews East Founder Jitu Weusi: Saturday May 30th, 4PM-6PM, “East Triumphants, Challenges and Today,”

Cultural Warriors: A Tribute to the 1960’s East Educational & Cultural Center Closing Forum, Saturday, June 6th, 4PM-8PM. Through the heartfelt memories of former members, staff, students, scholars and artists revisit the EAST’s historical and impact today on black culture, education, legislative and economy achievements.
